The Marian Year

On Monday 21st November twenty-five students representing the College’s SVP, Friday Club, Legion of Mary and Altar Servers, went on pilgrimage to Shrewsbury to celebrate the close of the Marian Year with Bishop Davies. The Solemn Mass marked the end of the period of spiritual growth in the College which had begun with Benediction in the College Hall on the 10th December last year. On that day over 500 miraculous medals were distributed and the College was consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. St. Anselm’s was the first school to host the image of Our Lady Help of Christians which had been blessed by the Bishop on the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

On the 20th January the College hosted a visit from John Pridmore the well known convert from a life of crime to Christian witness. The students crowded into the Hall eagerly receiving his gift of a rosary.

The feast of the Presentation of the Lord in February was celebrated with a joyful ceremony of the blessing of candles by Fr Patrick O’Brien, the College’s Chaplain. It was the feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary that gave the Marian Year its fitting conclusion. The Bishop’s homily brought together the history of the diocese with a sense of hope for the future.
