Careers Convention 2011

At the recent Careers Convention there was a wide selection of careers available.

We visited an apprenticeship provider (TTE Engineering) and the RAF.

We asked several questions ranging from salaries to promotion prospects and received lots of information. TTE provides apprenticeships sponsored by local industry, for example Shell and Tate & Lyle. We learnt that Shell alone spends £1,000,000 on new apprenticeships per year.

The RAF requires 5 GCSEs at grade C or above: a B grade in Maths, a C in English, and a C in Science. Qualities that are looked for are teamwork, motivation, leadership, initiative and being good at multi-tasking. There is a 9 week basic military training period. Work experience with the RAF is also a possibility.

When considering career options, it is a good idea to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What qualifications do you need?
  2. What does the career path offer?
  3. What are the main aspects of the role?
  4. Why should you choose that particular career?
  5. What personal qualities are required?
  6. What chances are there of promotion?
  7. What is it about the job that you will enjoy?
  8. What is the salary range?
  9. Is work experience desirable?
  10. What do you hope to achieve in the future?
The Careers Convention was a huge success, attracting nearly all students from Year 7 to 11, and Sixth Form. Many Universities were in attendance and gave up to date information on courses and career choices.
