Hockey

Hockey at St. Anselm’s has flourished and grown considerably since the sport was introduced in the late 1980s to widen the choice of sports and participation by College pupils. St. Anselm’s has developed a proud hockey tradition of producing many successful teams. A large number of students reach county and regional standard and go on to play for their Universities or for Club hockey sides. Whatever the standard we hope students enjoy the game and develop a sport for life.

The College runs an XI at 1st, 2nd U16, U15, U14 and U13. Hockey is also taught to all pupils in Year 7 and 8 as part of their Physical Education curriculum and is a Games option from Year 8. Training takes place in our excellent Sports Hall or on local Astroturf pitches. All teams have a weekly training session. The staff contributing and giving their time and expertise to the running of the sides are:- Mr. Taylor (Head of Physical Education and Games), Mr. Reynolds (Learning Mentor), Mr Hyde (Maths) and Mr Formela (Art).

The College teams compete in the County Cup (Wirral) a competition that leads to the North West, Northern and National Finals. We also play in the Wirral League and friendlies throughout the North West of England. Our pupils regularly represent County teams and often reach the finals of the Wirral Cup and North West regional tournaments.

The Senior hockey sides toured Holland in July 2015, the first ever overseas trip for hockey at the College. Please click here to read the full story.

In 2016/17 we have high hopes for more competitive hockey and development of the boys' abilities and skills.
