Prospective Parents

Welcome to the St. Anselm’s College website.

St. Anselm’s College is the Roman Catholic Grammar School for Boys in Wirral. We are a high performing Academy which enables us to focus upon our strategic priorities whilst retaining our Catholic ethos and grammar school identity. We aim to provide free access to a quality of education that bears comparison with that delivered by any school in England and Wales, whether maintained or independent.

In 2013 Ofsted reported that “students make good progress. The quality of teaching is good and some is outstanding. Students' attitudes to learning are very positive, they are ambitious to succeed and are strong ambassadors for the College. The College's approach to ensuring students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding. Consequently, the College is a safe, proud, harmonious community where students treat each other, adults and visitors with respect and courtesy." Parents, students and staff refer to the College as a “family” and this is reflected in all aspects of College life. Students achieve an average 9 - 10 grades A*-C at GCSE and 55% grades A*-B and 100% A-E at A level with 95% of Year 13 Leavers progressing to university.

Our vision is to educate a generation of confident Catholic, Christian leaders equipped with the attributes and qualifications required to represent our values in modern society and prepared for rewarding and productive lives. In March 2014 the inspector from the Diocese of Shrewsbury described St. Anselm’s as “outcomes for pupils, the provision for Catholic Education, leadership and management in the development of the Catholic life of the College are all confirmed by this inspection as outstanding.” Our students are active in supporting the Christian Brothers’ Mission in Sierra Leone, West Africa and our 6th Form Immersion group visited our twin school, St. Francis, Makeni, in 2014. A new group will return there in the near future once it is safe to do so. Students regularly support local adults with learning difficulties in the Friday Club and assist at local Homeless Missions and in Special Schools and at Asylum Link in Liverpool, supporting refugees and asylum seekers. The College was awarded the Anti-Bullying Quality Mark in December 2015, one of only 6 secondary schools nationally to have this status. In 2016 we were awarded "School of Sanctuary" status and received a 'Cardinal Hume' award in recognition of the efforts of our students in support of disadvantaged people.

At St. Anselm’s we seek to educate the whole person so we provide excellent opportunities in sport, music, the arts, technology and leadership development, including in the 6th Form. The new 6th Form Centre, located in “Outwood”, the former Christian Brothers’ house adjacent to the College site, opened in 2013. This wonderful building has been lovingly restored, making the most of a wealth of original architectural features, whilst at the same time converting it for use as a place for education in the 21st century, complete with state of the art technology.

We have always had a strong sporting tradition. Old boys Austin Healey, Simon Mason and Ben Johnston are full rugby internationals and our Under 15 Cross Country team are the reigning national champions. We have been Northern Schools champions for the past 3 years. Our Senior Rugby squad toured Canada and the USA in 2016 and College musicians regularly perform locally and abroad. Our Year 9 robot building team represented Great Britain in this year's Robocup World Final competition in Germany in July.
