Academics

St. Anselm’s provides a full, broad, balanced and differentiated academic education for students deemed suitable for Grammar School education.

The Curriculum is designed to provide a quality education in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. This is followed by a more specialist choice within the Sixth Form, preparing these students for AS, AVCE and A2 examinations.

Detailed information regarding the curriculum and examination results are available by clicking the links above.

In the Sixth Form, students are encouraged to take 4 AS, or 2 AS plus 2 AVCE, and all take part in General Studies, General R.S., Key Skills and Games programmes.

The school places great emphasis on the importance of personal studies carried out after school. Homework is essential to fulfil the demands of academic courses. We try to ensure that the amount of homework is appropriate to the age of the student. Year 7 students can expect a minimun one hour’s homework each evening. This will increase to between 2 and 3 hours’ work each evening by Year 11. Students in the Sixth Form will be expected to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week on personal study. All homework is regularly set, marked and recorded.

An internal reporting system monitors each student’s progress on a half-termly basis. Each year group receives a short interim report, and has its own Parents’ Evening. A full report on the year’s work is sent out towards the end of the Summer Term.

Many faculties organise visits or trips to enhance the teaching of their subjects. For example, the Languages Department organises a foreign exchange and trips to France and Germany. There are Geography and Science field trips, together with regular visits to the theatre etc.
