Music, in its choral and instrumental aspects, is an essential part of the curriculum and the College life at St. Anselm's. There is a fully equipped Music Department, with each boy given the opportunity to play an instrument from the string, woodwind, brass or percussion sections of the orchestra.
There is a range of musical societies, Chamber Orchestra, College Orchestra, College Choir, two Wind Bands, a Brass Group and a Choral Society, complemented by parents and staff. Tuition is by permanent and peripatetic tutors who encourage pupils to develop beyond basic musical abilities into specialist skills. In Summer 1998, the College Band and Chamber Orchestra performed in Barcelona, in summer 2000 they performed in Italy, and a further tour is planned for 2002.
There is a thriving dramatic tradition at the College, with specific workshops and opportunities to perform. Concerts are held at the College at least once a term. A major musical or drama production is staged each academic year, usually in the Spring Term. In 1998, the production was Oklahoma!, in 1999 it was "Hobson's Choice" and in 2000 "Blood Brothers". A major production is planned for July 2002 "Jesus Christ Superstar".
The School magazine, "The Anselmian", is published annually, and is edited by senior pupils in the College.
