Prestigious Golf Triumph!
On Saturday 28th April, six members of the St. Anselm’s Senior Golf Team travelled to the Isle
Of Man to take part in the inaugural King Williams College Golf Tournament. They were one of eight
teams from across the North West region invited to take part in this prestigious competition, which
was played over the internationally acclaimed Castletown Golf Club Links.
The team, coached by Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Witherspoon, spent the afternoon on the practice ground at
Castletown GC, before walking the course to familiarise themselves with the nuances of the fairways
and the greens. This included the splendid 17th hole, where the tee shot requires a drive with a
230-yard carry over a gaping 200-foot ravine that plunges down into the sea.
On Sunday 29th April, the team played 36 holes, involving a Stableford competition in the morning,
followed by an afternoon’s Texas Scramble. The conditions were incredibly testing, with a gusting
wind having a major impact on the scores returned by all competitors. However, solid technique and
excellent course management on the part of the St. Anselm’s golfers saw the team return a marvellous
combined Stableford score of 195 points.
At the conclusion of a very long, physically and mentally draining day, the team had played strongly
as individuals and as a group. As a direct result, they received their just rewards. The St. Anselm’s
team made their very own piece of College history by being crowned the first ever winners of the King
Williams College Stableford Competition.
They were presented with the trophy, a replica of the Claret Jug, at a presentation dinner in the
Barrovian Hall of the King Williams College itself. The team captain, John McKinney (Year 13),
collected the trophy on behalf of the rest of the team, which also included Jonathan Reynolds
(Year 13), Daniel Hopwood (Year 13), Mike Currie (Year 12), Joe Sephton (Year 12) and Tom Madden
(Year 12).
All of the boys are to be commended on their splendid efforts, proving themselves to be excellent
golfers as well as wonderful ambassadors for the College.
