Cross Country Triumph!

St. Anselm’s College in Birkenhead has a proud Cross Country heritage being the reigning Northern Schools Champions for the past 5 years as well as former national champions. However, they have never managed to win the prestigious King Henry VIII relays, which are contested by most of the top schools nationally, during the 35-year history of the event. This omission was rectified last month by the College’s senior team who produced a magnificent performance as outsiders to snatch the trophy on the final lap. They recorded the 5th fastest time in the history of an event which has been graced by such renowned runners as dual Olympic medallist Lord Sebastian Coe, despite being ranked only 7th on previous form. The team members in running order were Jordan Donnelly, Stephen Duckers, Matthew Hughes, Ben Martin, Adam Peers, who caught up a remarkable 50 seconds on his lap, and Tom Madden who sprinted home despite starting 20 seconds behind the leader. The race, run over 6x2 mile laps, was one of the most exciting ever witnessed by staff and supporters including Mr. James Horman and Mr. Dominic Tobin, the team coaches.
