St.Anselm’s College National Title Double

Consecutive English Schools Cross Country Victories

St.Anselm’s College reaffirmed their national cross country dominance when their Intermediate Boys team ran to victory in the English Schools Cup Final in Newquay, Cornwall, on Saturday 5th December 2009.

Having been crowned national junior champions in 2008, both junior and inter teams qualified for the national final with high expectations. The historic double was completed when the Intermediate Boys finished with a total score of 60 points defeating teams from Southend High school (65 points), and the Judd School, Tonbridge (79 points.)

The highlight of this national title was the individual silver medal place achieved by Matthew Byrne, who was supported by Daniel Jarvis (10th) William Reynolds (16th) & Andrew Desmond (32nd.) Non scoring athletes Matthew Westby, and Jo Jollie also finished in 47th and 48th places to crown a superb victory.

Head of Athletics & Cross Country James Horman commented: “To complete the double with a different group of athletes is special. All credit goes to the 9 lads who have worked so hard during the past 8 weeks. The team has responded to the challenge, and all their hard work has paid off.

We knew that the team was in good shape, and the race would be extremely close. The morale and motivation from the team was exceptional, including the 3 travelling reserves of Liam Gawne, Matthew Hay and Scott Richardson. The team spirit has been the key to today’s victory.”

This performance could see the College team gain international representative honours for England at the World Schools Cross Country Championships in Slovakia in April.

A Level Results

The average UCAS points score of 333 per student is again one of the best in Wirral, equivalent to 4 grade Cs and an AS level, comfortably ahead of the national average. All 86 students achieved 2 or more GCE (A level) passes.
There were many outstanding individual performances with 11% of candidates achieving 3 A grades or better. 6 students achieved 4 Grade As including 4 who will now progress to study Medicine, Peter Burke from Oxton, James Hartley from Willaston, Dave Quinn from Upton and David Romaniuk from Heswall. Peter and James visited the College’s twin school and projects supported by St.Anselm’s students in Sierra Leone in February, which has given them an insight into the reality of 3rd world medical conditions in advance of their studies. Their achievement was matched by Chris McLoughlin, from Oxton who also visited Sierra Leone, and Jamie Davies, from Birkenhead, who will study Philosophy and Biology respectively
Headmaster Simon Duggan declared that he and his staff were delighted by the students’ success. “This was one of or best-ever A level years. So many students blossomed in our 6th Form and fulfilled their potential. They made a tremendous contribution to the extra-curricular life of the College, including in sport where our senior Cross Country squad won the North of England Championships, Music and support for the Christian Brothers’ Sierra Leone mission! These students were impressive role models for younger students and excellent ambassadors for the College.”

GCSE Section

GCSE Results

Year 11 students at St. Anselm’s College are celebrating the best GCSE results in the College’s history during the official year of celebration following the 75th anniversary of the College’s foundation. 98% of Year 11 gained 5 or more of the highest grades, A*-C, with 93% gaining 5 or more A*-C grades including English and Maths, the national benchmark. 41% of students gained 5+ grades A*&A, another College record, and 41% of all entries were graded at A* or A. The average points score of 504, nearly 10 grades A*-C per student, was also a College record! Liverpool European Cup

St Anselm’s Edmund Rice Week this year was focused on `Building a Christian Community` one of the Eight Essentials of a Christian Brothers Education. Student in Years 7 – 10 took part in the varied activities which included a talk on living in a Christian community by the Benedictine Priest Fr. William Wright OSB from Ampleforth Abbey, taking part in workshops run by local artist and Christian Chris Duffett in the College’s prayer room, team work challenges in the puzzle emporium in room 109 and a highlight for many students the visit on the final day by Mark Chester from Liverpool F.C. community outreach who talked about his own faith linked into his love of sport and also the value and importance of the family. The students had the opportunity to have their photographs with the UEFA Champions League Cup. Many thanks go to Clare Black our facilitator for the week who worked closely with the Chaplaincy team.

Sacred Heart

St Anselm’s College Birkenhead marked the beginning of the Year of Priests on Friday 19th June with a Eucharistic procession and Benediction. Led by the College’s Chaplain Fr. Patrick O’Brien and the Shrewsbury diocesan director Fr. Jonathan Mitchell, students joined in prayers for vocations and the life of the priesthood. Benediction was held in the heart of the College building in front of the Marian shrine erected in 2007. This academic year marked the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the College and the end of the year is always dedicated to a week of activities inspired by the ideals of Blessed Edmund Rice the founder of the Congregation of the Christian Brothers. This year the theme will be building up a Christian community and will include opportunities for each of the students to have personal spiritual devotion and take part in team building and reflective workshops. The apostolic life of the College is flourishing with the oldest SVP youth conference in the country which works with the local homeless, the weekly Friday Club for adults with learning difficulties and the Lourdes group that help the family of FLAME every Easter. Recently the students have added to their mission a vocations group which meets every month under the patronage of St. Philip Neri. The students have committed themselves to praying every day for an increase in vocations to the diocese.

League Table Success

Our excellent GCE results in 2008 were confirmed by the publication of the recent DCSF League Tables. St.Anselm’s is the top 6th Form in Wirral for value added since GCSE for the A Level (GCE) cohort of 2008, using the cva (contextualised value added) measure favoured by the DCSF to judge student attainment. Our cva score of 1031.4 was this year’s highest in Wirral!

Our cva score for progress from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 was 1014.7, based on our 2008 GCSE results. This was the best for an all-boys’ school in Wirral, including the other Grammar Schools, and 2nd best of all the selective schools! Congratulations to Year 11 and their teachers!

NOMINATIONS FOR PARENT GOVERNORS

As you know, each school has its own Governing Body. Under our constitution, the Governing Body of St. Anselm’s College comprises four Parent Governors, three Staff Governors (including the Headmaster), two Governors appointed by the Local Authority, and eleven Foundation Governors. The term of office of all Governors (except the Headmaster) is four years.
Governors have important responsibilities for the overall conduct of the College and, clearly, the views of parents are of great value. All Governors, including Parent Governors, are equally valued for their contribution to the life of St. Anselm’s. The College holds three full governing body meetings a year (one per term on a Thursday at 5.00 p.m. in the College Library). These are purely business meetings and are not a forum to discuss any grievances on the day to day running of the College. In addition, Parent Governors serve on a range of sub-committees, each of which meets every half-term.
Parent Governors are elected by all the parents in the College and it is now necessary to elect four Parent Governors for our Governing Body to fill current vacancies.
If you would like to nominate a candidate, please complete the form and return it no later than 4.00 pm on Friday, 19th September. You must, of course, obtain the agreement of your nominee. If you return a form, a signed receipt will be given to you. Should two parents living in the same household wish to make separate nominations, a further form can be obtained from the College.
If there are more nominations than places on the Governing Body it will be necessary to hold an election. Candidates are invited to supply, in not more than 75 words, a note on their background and interests. In the event of an election being necessary, this information will be available to all parents who are eligible to vote.

!!!75th Anniversary Celebrations!!!

The College celebrates its 75th anniversary this month, having been founded by the congregation of the Christian Brothers in September 1933. The Rt.Rev. Brian Noble, Bishop of Shrewsbury, will concelebrate Mass with Diocesan priests, including several old Anselmians, at Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception parish church, Cavendish Street, Birkenhead, on Friday 19th September at 7.30pm. All members and friends of the Anselmian community and Edmund Rice family are most welcome to attend.

'There will be a 75th Anniversary Mass of Celebration at Our Lady's, Cavendish St. on Friday 19th Sept. (7.30pm) - all Old Anselmians are invited to attend.'

75th Anniversary Celebrations!

The anniversary celebrations to mark the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the College in September 1933 got off to a flying start in July. On Saturday 12th July more than 200 guests, including many Old Anselmians and several Christian Brothers (!), danced the night away at the Gala Summer Ball held at the College. This was organised jointly by the Friends of St. Anselm’s, The Anselmian Association and The Edmund Rice Trust and our Guest Speaker was the barrister and broadcaster Mike McParland, himself a student at the College during the 1970s.
4 days later, on Wednesday 16th July, we celebrated with our annual Summer Serenade concert. In addition to the usual selection of college musicians, including Matthew Smith who has performed in every concert during his 7 years at the College, the orchestra was bolstered by the presence of many former members including professional musicians such as Leslie Neish and Nick Byrne, both of whom tutor college students. The students, past and present, marked the occasion of Mr. Charlesworth’s 20 years service at the College by presenting him with a new baton, possibly steel-tipped!
The next anniversary event will be a Mass of Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the evening of Friday 19th September at Our Lady’s Parish Church, Cavendish Street, Birkenhead. The Rt. Rev. Brian Noble, Bishop of Shrewsbury, will concelebrate Mass with several Anselmian priests. All families, former students and members of the Anselmian and Christian Brothers’ community are most welcome to attend. Further details are available from the college Office on 0151-652-1408.

Edmund Rice Week, July 2008

The College recently celebrated its annual Edmund Rice Week with this year’s theme being that of “ Peace & Reconciliation”. An astonishing variety of activities was arranged by our Chaplain, Miss Lacey, including assemblies hosted by visiting speakers, workshops, class visits and practical Judo sessions!
We were fortunate enough to be able to welcome such nationally renowned figures as Colin Parry OBE, Mrs. Gee Walker and Lou McGrath OBE, all of whom were willing to share their insights and experiences with students and staff in the context of their contribution to peace and reconciliation in our society and abroad. Mr Parry impressed us all with his frankness and realism and it was truly moving to hear him speak of the death of his son, Tim Parry, following the Warrington Bomb in 1993, and how he responded, including by the establishment of the Warrington Peace Centre. Mrs. Walker moved everyone with her dignity and compassion as she spoke about the work of the Anthony Walker Foundation, named in memory of her son who was the victim of a racist murder in Liverpool. Mr. McGrath gave us a remarkable presentation about the work of MAG, the Mines Action Group, an international charity of which he is Chief Executive. He explained its work in landmine clearance and weapons’ decommissioning in war zones, often in partnership with the United Nations. Fr. Paul Shaw from the Diocese led sessions on reconciliation and Canon John Marmion, himself an Old Anselmian, explained the humanitarian emergency developing in sub-Saharan Africa, most especially the famine in Ethiopia, which he has recently witnessed.
Mr. Fraine and Mr. Hollifield, both of whom have visited Sierra Leone, and Tom Murray, the Edmund Rice Youth Development Co-ordinator, led assemblies focusing upon the work of the Christian Brothers there following the end of the Civil War in the 1990s (see the film “Blood Diamond” for a realistic perspective!). This includes the Edmund Associates for Disadvantaged Youth (EADY) which provides vocational training for young people who were robbed of their education and childhood by the Civil War. They support street children, former child soldiers and those forced into prostitution, among others, a mission blessed Edmund Rice would have recognised! The week concluded with the annual Br. Kerrigan Sponsored Walk which has already raised £4,000 for the West African Mission. This money, and the proceeds from recent walks, will be presented to EADY and our partner schools by our 6th Form pilgrims on their retreat to Sierra Leone in February 2009.

Politicians’ visits to St.Anselm’s!

The College was recently honoured with a visit from Birkenhead MP Rt. Hon. Frank Field, one of our strongest supporters. He came to congratulate staff and students on their recent successes and to meet with officials from the DCSF and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury in order to emphasise his support for our campaign for a new 6th Form Block in this our 75th Anniversary year. Mr. Field was greatly impressed by the 6th Form prefects who greeted him on his arrival, several of whom are his constituents. They briefly outlined their academic ambitions and achievements, and plans for the 75th Anniversary celebrations, before regaling him with tales of their exploits on last season’s successful 1st XV Rugby Tour of Canada! The attached photograph shows Mr. Field and Cllr George Davies with The Headmaster, The Chairman of Governors, Mr. Brian Cummings, and DCSF officials.
To maintain a political balance it must be recorded that the College was visited in July by 3 recent Anselmians, all of whom were elected as Conservative councillors in the recent local elections. We offer our congratulations to Councillors Paul Hayes, James Keeley and Tom Anderson, all of whom number amongst the youngest councillors in the country. All 3 have only just left university, so this is a fantastic example of active citizenship and an impressive testimony to the quality of the impartial political education they received from Mr. Dowse on their GCE Government & Politics course!

Outstanding Diocesan Inspection Report

At the start of the summer term, the College was subject to a Diocesan Inspection. The result was another outstanding report, of which details can be found here.
