Headmaster's Message 12th March 2021

Dear Anselmian parents and students,

I am pleased to report that we have effected a very smooth return to teaching and learning on site this week. The attitude of our students has been exemplary and they do seem very pleased to be back at the College and have quickly adapted to our Covid routines and timetable.

Our Covid testing regime is well underway, as required by our political masters and the DfE. The 6th Form and Year 11 have already had their second tests and we might complete the required 3 rounds of testing by the end of next week. Our Testing Team have done a wonderful job and the inevitable disruption has been kept to a minimum. We have completed 1200 tests with no false positives and only 1 positive result. Sadly an asymptomatic case has necessitated 12 boys having to self-isolate, a reminder that the Covid virus remains a menace and we must be on our guard against it. Please do not send your son into College if he is unwell or exhibits any Covid symptoms.

In terms of staffing Mr Davis, Head of Science, is absent and his timetable has been taken over by Mr Steve Allen, an experienced Physics teacher.

A small number of boys are still attempting to wear hoodies or tracksuit tops under their blazers on the spurious grounds that they are cold. If so they ought to be following the College uniform code and wearing a grey sweater! There is an unseasonal icy wind so I would strongly advise the wearing of long-sleeves shirts, rather than short-sleeved ones, unless you aspire to a place on the PE staff! It is your parental responsibility to ensure that your sons are appropriately dressed. Non-compliant clothing will be confiscated.

Tomorrow morning we will be running Rugby training at the fields for Years 7-11 and all interested pupils are welcome to join us. Your sons have been given the times of their practices which are staggered for social distancing reasons. Boys must arrive changed as we cannot open the changing rooms and we request parents to simply drop off and collect your sons, again for social distancing reasons. The public health situation does not yet allow us to facilitate mingling and social contact.

Year 13 have their Parents Evening on Thursday from 5pm. This will be conducted on School Cloud. Mr Hawksworth has emailed the joining instructions to Year 13 parents. Appointments are limited to 5 minutes per teacher and will primarily be with subject teachers. I will also be available for pastoral and general discussions, including university entry. Miss Baines and I will be forwarding videos next week to help you with the evening. Our teachers will  NOT be able to predict Centre Assessed grades for you on Thursday as the criteria for them has yet to be published! They will be based on a range of evidence, including Mock Exams, NEAs, End of Unit tests, essays, presentations and homework, some of which will be completed during the next 2 months, including further assessments and Mock Exams. Furthermore the grades will be based on the standard a student has reached in each subject by the time of submission in early June, to be verified by hard evidence, so there is still much to do and no grades in any subject are completed or guaranteed!

Looking to the future Year 12 have a virtual University and Higher Education Admissions afternoon on Wednesday 17th March. Details have been sent to you by Dr Cooper. Students will be allowed to sign out from the site at 12.50pm to spend the afternoon exploring general and specific university presentations. Parents can also participate!"

It is wonderful to be back to some form of normality at the College. I hope that you are well and enjoying the release from remote learning. We only have a fortnight of term left and intend to make the most of this time. I wish all of you an enjoyable weekend, especially all mothers in our community on Mother's Day this Sunday. Please remember in your prayers old Anselmian Mr Martin Decker who died this week. May he rest in peace.

Yours sincerely,

Simon Duggan
