Welcome to the St. Anselm’s College website.

St. Anselm’s College is the Roman Catholic Grammar School for Boys in Wirral. We are a high performing Academy which enables us to focus upon our strategic priorities whilst retaining our Catholic ethos and grammar school identity.

In 2019 Ofsted reported that “Pupils’ outcomes are good. They make good progress during their time at the school and successfully move on to their next steps. Senior leadership, including that of the deputy headteachers, is a strength of the school. Governors fulfil their responsibilities well. Leaders promote positive values clearly and consistently. They set and support a culture where pupils feel valued and are aspirational. The leadership of teaching, learning and assessment is highly effective. Teaching is now good.” Parents, students and staff refer to the College as a “family” and this is reflected in all aspects of College life. Students achieve an average 9 - 10 grades 9-4 at GCSE and 55-60% grades A*-B and 100% A-E at A Level with 95% of Year 13 Leavers progressing to university and over 40% to Russell Group Universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Our vision is to educate a generation of confident Catholic, Christian leaders equipped with the attributes and qualifications required to represent our values in modern society and prepared for rewarding and productive lives. In March 2019 the Inspector from the Diocese of Shrewsbury described St. Anselm’s as “a good Roman Catholic Grammar School with many outstanding features.” Our students are active in supporting the Christian Brothers’ Mission in Sierra Leone, West Africa and our 6th Form Immersion groups have visited our twin school, St. Francis, Makeni and related projects and will return there in February 2020. Students regularly support local adults with learning difficulties in the Friday Club and assist at Homeless Missions and in Special Schools.

At St. Anselm’s we seek to educate the whole person so we provide excellent opportunities in sport, music, the arts, technology and leadership development, including in the 6th Form. The 6th Form Centre, located in “Outwood”, the former Christian Brothers’ house adjacent to the College site, opened in 2013. This wonderful building has been lovingly restored, making the most of a wealth of original architectural features, whilst at the same time converting it for use as a place for education in the 21st century, complete with state of the art technology.

We have always had a strong sporting tradition. Old boys Austin Healey, Simon Mason and Ben Johnston are Rugby full internationals and our Cross Country teams are recent national champions. Both our Athletics Teams reached the Finals of the English Schools Cup in 2019, finishing in the top 12. Our Senior Rugby squad will tour South Africa in 2020 and College musicians regularly perform locally and abroad, including in the Wilfred Owen Choir during the Centenary Commemorations and for the Royal Visit to Birkenhead in 2018. A group of students will visit China on an Exchange Trip to Taicang in 2020.
